how easy is it to stick carbs on a 3.9

Easy enough.
Even less work to connect 4 wires to the efi loom to make that work...

This is what i found when i looked in the engine.


It looks like a piston ring on number 6 broke up.


You can see where it has hammered into the head.


It has also torn a hole in the piston. most of the damage is in the side , but it has made a pinprick hole in the face of the piston, and burnt a hole under the undamaged piston rings.


the biggest problem is the damage to the cylinder wall, some quite deep scratches, and a nasty hollow that matches the hole on the piston ( although less deep). At this stage rebuilding the engine looks time consuming and pretty expensive

Would you like some suggestions for other engines asides the V8?

Sounds like the engine would need to come out and a full strip to get the cylinder wall sorted, assuming you could find an oversize piston to suit if it could be machined out.

A Nissan LD28 could be the thing to go for if you can't find another 6, especially if it comes with a conversion kit attached.

Or a V8.

My local man who does engines had something similar on a six, they re bored it and sleeved it IIRC to fit the standard pistons.

I wouldn't go diesel on an FC, the noise must be awful.

Ouch! What a pain in the wotsit to say the least! Sometimes Land Rovers like to really test our patience...best wishes for a speedy and reasonably 'pain free on the wallet' repair.

You'd be surprised. A Tdi is livable with a bit of soundproofing. Even Le Frog and it's Cummins isn't bad woth ear defenders, considering you're sat on top of a 6 litre truck engine with no engine cover.

Anyways, whatever happens, the blocks coming out.

You know my view that the Tdi is overrated. Now a TD5 or a Tdci conversion would be of interest...but generally I am not a fan of diesel engines.

it looks like a re-bore and a new set of pistons is going to be over a grand, even with me doing lots of the work. I need to find out about fitting a new liner. at the mo i am looking for another 6cyl as the fastest/ easyest replacment. either way i think the Fc is ging to be off the road for the near future

I have acquired a 6 cylinder series III engine that seems in reasonable condition. i am in the process of changing over all the ancillerys, building up to trying to swap the engine. I am hoping to be sble to get it done with out removing too much of the cab.
