South African Sabre

Postby gerald112 » Sun Apr 13, 2014 7:15 pm

A friend of mine showed me an article from the Military Machines Int'l Magazine about a Land Rover called "Sabre".

The article says:

Blablabla... At heart, the Sabre was a Series III 109-inch Land Rover with the 2.6-litre six-cylinder petrol engine. The basic vehicles were actually built in South Africa at Blackheath, in Cape Province, from CKD kits shipped out of the UK, but how much of th special configuration was built at Blackheath and how much by military workshops remains open to Question.
The chassis was a special type also supplied to the SADF for other 109s with a rear overhang extended by two feet to accommodate a longer body. However, the standart SADF 109s did not have six-cylinder engines, or heavy-duty Salisbury axles front and rear, or the low-geared main and transfer gearboxes from the Forward Control models. Nor did they have extended spring shackles and big 9.00x16 tyres on special split-rim wheels. The sabre did.
Blablabla...

Does anybody know it?? And, does anybody know the rear overhang? An extension by 2 feet sounds very long...

Sorry, I found no pics of it  .

The 2' overhang and other info in the article you quoted seems inaccurate. One of my Landies has the extended chassis and it only measures 1' longer. According to James Tailor this extended chassis was unique to SADF and probably the first production Hi-Cap loadbin on LRs.

I do have some pics of a Sabre and will post them when I can find them.

I know I have seen photo of Sabres before. They had a big lorry-like front bumper with square headlights in, big bull bar, winch...and a very long body. If I can find the photos I will post them. They are kind of Pink Pantherish as well.

I have found some of mine. These 2 Sabres were waiting for restoration some 3 years ago. I have some pics of them restored, if only I can find them :x
