re-convert to original six-pot and box...not always easy...

Postby wilberth » Thu Nov 06, 2014 7:06 pm

As 22300017G has found a good and dry place to hibernate, I am looking for the missing bids to get it back on the road next spring.
Now I have a funny problem.
Mr. Wit let me to believe original 203 rims were hard to find. And I personally expected the same for a oneton centre PTO. Now I have a set of 203's more or less complete and more coming my way and there is a oneton PTO for sale on the local online adds (not cheap though)

I just have a very hard time sourcing a six-pot around here. In the past months I only found one non runner (altough owner claimed different, just hard to prove without any wiring on the vehicle) and that would include a rather tatty 109 still fitted around it and for restauration purposes an even worse SIII was included. Asking about 5300 pounds for the lot. I didn't fancy that, espacially not the lot...

Now the question is, are any (good) six-pot to be found in the UK. And how about a oneton box... No use buying a "should never tell my wife the price" oneton PTO without a box to fit it to.

I am on the trail of a oneton box, at least a transfercase build up with the parts (and box is w/o any serialnumber whatsoever) but it is fitted to a SIII main and a 4 cil. bellhousing. Can this be converted to suit six-pot bellhousing without dramatic changes to box? Were there significant differences between the IIA and the III transfercase?

Lots of questions there... Not sure how to continue my quest now as I am not sure if in the end it will all combine. Would love to find a complete set from someone that did a conversion on his/her vehicle (will the FC parts work for a oneton?)

Any and all thougts welcome.

Regards Wiberth

Love to get this (now I have a picture, it still hides) running again however I have no purpose for it whatsoever...

Well THE person to speak to about PTOs is a regular contributor to this forum so hopefully he will be along regarding that aspect - I think all you need is the driveshafts and UJ.

As to the engines and gearboxes, well yes they do come up from time to time. I would recommend posting on the series II club (although I think you may have already done this) and just keep asking around. How good they would be is another question...

the shaft and UJoint appear to be there, rusty, but present. It runs from a 4 hole flange that I believe needs to fit a PTO at the gearbox end, to a splined shaft that I believe should fit the unit on the rear cross member. Maybe missing a nut here and there, but haven't yet opened it up.
The PTO on the gearbox however went missing together with the box.

As to the sixpot I guess there is more than one approach, either it needs a rebuild and price should reflect this (however with a sixpot that appears impossible as I do not expect anyone to donate a lot of money with the engine and from what I've heard, rebuilding can be sort off expensive) Or It needs to be a good runner, but than I would like to see it run before I buy.
Anyway, not a lot of luck so far on the sixpot, but hey, it is only november, well december so it may yet come along before spring time.

On the other hand, my 203 rims arrived this weekend and in a not so bad condition so I am a happy man now having a complete set. Was able to swap with a set of bright and shiny new modulars so combined with shipment of these and tire re-mounting cost, all in all I didn't do too bad I guess. Anyway as Mr. Wit says, its not the price its the finding of the things...

rims - check, done that
SIIa sixpot - open
SIIa oneton box - open
oneton PTO - do you mean rob (lroptional equipment) I dropped him a mail the other day, that may work out, would just like to find the box first so I know what I am tying into.
finishing SIII 109 station to make room in garage - open

As you can see, only 4 points out of five left before I can start, I would say thats 20% done, right :DD

Yes Rob is the man to speak to regarding PTOs. I seem to think he mentioned he had something suitable for you in stock but don't quote me on that.

He does, but, well, no but.
It's just that I am a bit busy at the moment to have the focus on the hobby and somehow it sound like a good idea to have a box first. However if they will fit on any oneton box than I might just as well tick the next box on the project.

I've got a spare one ton box, rear gearbox pto and two piece prop with centre beating support on bobbin mounts. Box a bit rumbly in neutral. It's currently in a swb 2a so got a 2a swb bellhousing but have a few 6 cyl 2a bellhousing lying around.

Re: re-convert to original six-pot and box...getting there..

Postby wilberth » Tue Apr 14, 2015 12:49 pm

Things are starting to come together:

rims - check, done that
SIIa sixpot - sort of check, its a SIII, but that will work I guess....
SIIa oneton box - went over to Andrew this weekend and a box followed me home.
oneton PTO - overkill on this one, now have one from Rob and one with the box... Guess I can make someone happy with it when the time comes.
finishing SIII 109 station to make room in garage - open

4 out of 5 done :) Just need to finish the SIII first if I don not want to drown in too many projects "half way".

The "wishlist" can now be drawn up. Still looking for...
SIIa sixpot clutch slave cilinder mount
DBG truck cab in original paint. (now have a really ugly white one, I can repaint, but that will than be the only shiny part on the truck)
new wiring harness would be welcome as all wiring at present is kinda brittle while all connectors turned gooey

but first to finish the SIII (and even that will have to wait as I first have to finish the cranes on "pioneering spirit" for whoever is into vessels a bit)

Anyway, most of the hard to find bits are in the shed. :DD
hope to see you in september (peterborough) with a shiny SIII station, knowing the rebuilt of 22300017G can start.

Regards, Wilberth

It is on hold as my client appreciates it when I finish this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RhhsspildQ first.
Notice the boys are toying around a bit with the small cranes, but my work concentrates on getting the big ones to work. (the grey beams, with the red levers. 16 of them, that will later on be removing oilfield production rigs up to 48000 metric tons in one go)

Meanwhile, while I did have a few pound to spare but no time to spent, I felt the project owed me a new wiring loom. :DD So I ordered one from auto sparks which is now sitting on the driver seat waiting for better days.

It will come, don't worry, just not a job to be done over the weekend.

Regards, Wilberth
