I don’t mean to sound like a premiership footballer, but I thought I would post a picture of my new Knob .



I know many people will find this outrageous, or even be horrified at the sight of this . I wanted the passenger to be able to reach it and twiddle it if they started to feel hot . I know lots of people don’t think you should do this sort of thing inside the cab.( They prefer to climb under the bonnet to twiddle theirs ). My only real worry is that someone will twist it too far with it and it might fall off
.
I’ll wait until the lock-tight is dry then give it a trial run.

Finaly got the acustic foam fitted to the cab roof. It has made a massive difference. Sitting in the cab a 50 mph used to sound like an F 15 taking off next to you . Now though it is more like an F14 . ( It is still loud, but actualy much quieter than it was, you can almost talk over the engine.) I think this stuff in the roof of a normal truckcab would make a massive difference.



Ps Tried the new knob out all seems to work, ( not too stiff and did not fall off in my hand )

Not much progress recently, but the weather is improving as is the amount of day light so I need to get on.
Next big job is the repair to the load bed. This will mean removing the jib( it may never return ).
So I thought that I should give the jib one last run out.

This is the only time I have used the crane for its original purpose. I used an old motor cross tyre which was not ideal, I think a smaller fatter car tyre would be better.
I was going to put the chains around the front axel, but that would have meant the load being taken across the steering linkages.
Anxious to avoid bending track rods, I put the chains around the springs at the front dumb irons. This worked reasonably well, although the tyre did slip a little.




The wire rope is stiff and hard to maneuver until the load is on it. The Harvey frost winch is quite clever
It seems to be a twin ratio winch fast to take up the load, then you can hear the ratio change as you start to lift the load. It is not easy to turn the winch, but not particularly hard either. ( I guess it is pretty slow compared to modern electric winches ).


I was a bit shocked by the amount the rear springs on the fc compressed, but everything seemed to work fine.

Has anyone had any experience of using these, or similar cranes

Went out on a bit of an expedition this morning. After a couple of miles the fuel pump stopped working No drama though just switched over to gas. Aftr another couple of miles i realised the reason the pump was not working was that the alternator charging light was glowing dimly and the ammeter was firmly south of zero i cant find any thing broken , not loose wires, fuses, relays, fan belt etc so it looks like the alternator has bitten the dust dissapointingly the alterator is one of the newest bits of kit on the truck )
