Rim rims rims...

There is it seems still confusion about regarding the wheel rims fitted to 1-Ton and FC Land-Rovers. I think it might be useful if those of us who actually have them to hand (rather than just armchair knowitalls) actually look at what we have.

For starters, Land-Rover parts books read that the 1-Tons were always fitted with 569204 rims, also known as IIA FC rims. These are 6.5" rims but with the "lesser" offset. Generally speaking, most 1-Tons and TACR-1s do have 204 rims.

569204 rims:

The original rims from 26600082B were 204s for example.

However, some 1-Tons do appear to have genuine 569203 rims, such as 22900042G:

As this was a working breakdown truck all its life, and never in the hands of an enthusiast until it was bought by Nick, we can say with some certainty that they are the original rims.

My own vehicle also has a set of 203s, however they are not original to it, as the paint was originally deep bronze green. I doubt they are from an FC, and one of the previous owners had three 1-Tons including mine, so I would guess the rims are from one of his, I suspect vehicle 22900135H which I am fairly sure has the bonnet off mine!

As 569203 and 569204 are consecutive part numbers, it would be logical to suggest they were designed at the same time and probably (in fact almost certainly) made alongside each other. It would also make sense that the rims could have found their way under various vehicles - we know that Land-Rover could and did use whatever was to hand to complete a vehicle and get it out and sold, usually relating to items such as lamps, but perhaps also applicable to rims.

To add further confusion though, we do encounter rims which are stamped up 569203 which is then obliterated with XXXXX over the top, and re-stamped 569204. The rims physically *are* 569204s. There does seem to be some variation, with slightly different rims wearing the same part number.

Over to you then folks, what do you have? Any photos or measurements I am sure will be very useful.

I have just gone though my photo collection and tried to identify what rims are fitted to the various 1-Tons. I would say the deeper offset 569203 rims are probably slightly more common on surviving 1-Tons than the 569204s. However, this could be down to enthusiastic owners fitting the more desirable and "macho" deeper rims. What is interesting is that 204 rims seem more common on series IIIs, with more IIAs having the more offset rim. Some may well be fitted with 130 rims, and some were first seen on 5.5" lwb rims (some were even built like this for 7.50x16 tyres) so it is difficult to say what the vehicles had when new. Some vehicles also have mixed sets, quite probably due to fleet owners swapping rims over as and when needed.

It is also very difficult to identify these rims accurately due to what I can only describe as an optical illusion caused by tyres. Whilst with 900x16 tyres fitted I can be reasonably sure I have identified the rims correctly, it becomes very difficult when fitted with 7.50x16 or other smaller tyres. I saw a photo of a series 1 fitted with 569203 rims, and they looked about 8" wide, because the tyres were something like a 205 profile - quite wide but not very tall.
The best way to tell is look from a 3/4 view and look at the middle of the rim (where the hub and studs go) and compare that to the outer part of the rim. When the middle section looks very "pushed in" that would be a 569203 rim, when it overhangs the outer section slightly that would be a 569204.

Directly side-on it is almost impossible to tell the two types of rim apart.

Does anyone have photos of the early IIA FC rim, 543384 which I understand was centred on the rim?

I'll have a dig around the rims I've got here, see if I have anything unusual and see what measurements I can take.

I was told today by R.Crathore at Land-Rover that 1-Ton/FC rims etc were made from thicker metal than other wheels...
