Series winches

Mr.Wit has asked that I provide some detail on the winches used on series Land Rovers, at least with relevance to the FCs, 1-Tons, 101s etc.

I can only really give an outline, especially as my knowledge of the early winches is limited.

The IIA/IIB FC so far as I can establish was only usually fitted with the hydraulic drum winch, which was fitted somewhere just ahead of the rear axle, and used a system of rollers to allow both front and rear pull. This entailed a small oval fairlead in the front bumper and a more conventional fairlead at the back.

Some IIBs owned by the GPO had large hydraulic capstan winches fitted to the front, but these seems to have been a local modification not offered by the factory.

The different gearbox mainshaft and transfer box required unique power take offs and engagement levers to be designed. These were of course much more complicated for the Forward Controls, but were still non-standard even on a 1-Ton. 1-Ton/FC PTOs have a larger bearing and the engagement fork is cranked rather than straight.

1-Tons were supplied commonly with hydraulic or mechanical drum winches, and occasionally with capstan winches, however I do not know of any known to be supplied new with a capstan winch.

The hydraulic winch was the standard MKII winch, manufactured by Hill-Lushington in the UK. This comprised the winch itself, plus motor, gearbox PTO, oil tank, spool valve and pipework. There was no oil cooler in the system. The winch was available with three fairlead designs. The most common was a large open fairlead with three rollers, ususally being at the top and sides, but the top one could be fitted to the bottom to allow a downward pull. A smaller "letterbox" fairlead was also availabe, but much rarer. Later, the two older designs were done away with and a smaller four-roller fairlead was offered, which is very similar to a standard modern fairlead.
