DVLA - You couldn't make it up!

Bought a new toy a little while back. Sent the V5 off with change of owner details completed, along with a Sorn Declaration (V890) form to ensure I didn't receive an £80 fine. Waited for reply....received letter today, along with returned V890 stating that the DVLA are unable to accept the form as I am not the registered keeper, and I should either re-submit the V890 with the V5 (which obviously they now have somewhere), or they very helpfully sent me a blank Application for a V5 which of course comes with a £25 fee.

So, I am taking bets on how long I will be held on the telephone tomorrow.

GRRRRRR....rant over!!


p.s. This is the same DVLA that took me to court for 'allegedly' failing to advise notification of change of owner of a vehicle some 15 years previously!.....after a wasted day of my time, (to a court case which the DVLA didn't turn up) all was found in my favour, only for the DVLA to start the proceedings over again! GRRRRRR....rant over!!

So far as I know the SORN only applies if the vehicle has been off-road in recent years. Both of my projects are too old for it to be an issue. I assume yours was on the road more recently? Your probably likely stems from the two different departments doing the paperwork in the wrong order. So they try to do the SORN but the ownership has not yet been updated. Sorry to say it but it pays to do one thing at a time with DVLA, ie send in the ownership info *then* the SORN when you get the V5C back. A pain but easier than the alternative.

Not on the road for past 30 years, but as a change of owner has occurred, Sorn requirement kicks in. As for process, agreed...although the Sorn Declaration form even has a tick box to state that you have submitted the V5 with the from.. (.and also once bitten by the DVLA system with £250 fines and CCJ's through no wrong doing , I try to do the right thing) .

Anyway, after a sweltering hot day in a diesel van with no air con, a DVLA letter WITHOUT my new V5 in was the last thing I was looking forward to when I got home...but atleast the beer and a sit in the garden has helped return my 'Moan Gauge' back to an almost acceptable mid range level ( at least the dog has stopped cowering in the corner now!)...so thanks for listening!....

I am sure SORN did not need to be applied to a vehicle that had been off the road prior to SORN being introduced? I imagine there are thousands of long term projects that are not current on the road or on SORN. Does anyone know more?

Yes here it is, SORN not required for vehicle off the road prior to 31st Jan 1998. I suppose you can make a voluntary one. I know we had to SORN Flo as it was still on the road in the early 2000s.

Nearly 2 months on, letters, phone calls...still no V5C....no doubt they will take me to court again for allegedly failing to notify!....still I wait in anticipation each day to see what the postie brings....I wouldn't mind except for the fact that I am following the processes that the DVLA request me to do and still nothing seems to happen...anyway rant over for the time being...and apologies for wasting anyone's time who has clicked here to read this rant....

Well, after another follow up phonecall, i have had the following confirmation from the DVLA;

1.) They have no way or chance of finding the misplaced V5..so my tough luck! ( Uncaring DVLA!)
2.) The advice I was given in the first telephone call I am now told was incorrect. (incompetent DVLA?)
3.) The letter sent from the first telephone call advice has gone unanswered. ( Rude DVLA!)
4.) Second telephone call advice is to send an application for a v5c, along with a sorn declaration....of course with the £25 fee!! (Greedy DVLA!)

No doubt i'll now get a fine for apparently failing to advise DVLA within the allotted timescale of change of owner!

Update on item 3 in my previous update.

Letter has been responded to, DVLA have accepted that they have misplaced the original V5, and are set to waive all fees etc, and are now due to send a new V5c.....

V5c now received, which is a relief. Thanks to Jeremy for his help, otherwise I think I would have still been waiting.
