I was speaking to a colleague yesterday who was very excitedly telling me about his latest purchase, a Defender 90 and what a bargain it was. Alarm bells started to ring; it seemed too cheap and the seller far too co-operative (call me cynical!) offering to deliver the 90 at their own expense once he had paid for it.

The final doubt was cast by the Paypal invoice he was sent, which although it contained the various Paypal and Ebay logos and did look authentic, asked him to make a bank transfer payment, not pay through Paypal. It also included a section which advised that he didn't tell his bank what the transfer was for, which seemed a strange thing for Paypal to request.

A quick online check returned two example invoices with the exact same wording on scam warning sites. Fortunately he hadn't already made the payment, so he was lucky this time.
