help required? 2b weight class driving licence?

Postby 1954coxy » Sat Feb 27, 2016 8:36 pm

Hi all. About to purchase a 2b for my collection and just wondered if anyone could shed any light on whether I am able to drive it on a standard car licence as I'm unsure as to what weight catagory it comes under as I can only drive up to 3500kg. Appreciate any input.
Thanks in advance Andrew Cox

Most are less than 3,499kg, some fire engines and other special conversions were plated for more, but it's a fairly simple paperwork exercise to downgrade them to 3,499kg or less.

The vehicle was an ex cherrypicker. So glad that is the case as my plan was to build it as a flatbed to use for work now and then. Do you happen to know roughly what their weight is as standard unladen?

I have a 1972 ex post office/bt cherry picker is rated weight is 3760
You can do a dvla check to confirm the weight if yours
However......

Did you pass your test before 1997 Andrew?

If so you should be entitled to drive vehicles upto 7.5 tonne gross weight

Ok May have to look at downrating it then. Will have to look into what is required to do so. Unfortunately no, I'm only 26 and passed my test in 2008. Didn't think about it until I'd agreed to purchasing it though.

That will be the eBay me then eh?
Looks like a worthy project, did you view it before bidding?
I had a lorry downrated from 10 tonne to 7.5 about 15 years ago, if I remember it was just a paperwork exercise and a retest at lower rated level, but it was a while ago.....

That's the one. A little more than I was hoping but it ticked all the boxes for me. No didn't get chance to get over there as I'm based in Leicester but spoke to the guy for quite a while about it. Never been affraid of a bit of hard work and the 2b should mean the 109 doesn't get to beaten up then when using it for moving bigger stuff. Been after one for a while but with little luck. Hopefully it will prove to be worth it

My 2A weights exactly 2.3 tonnes Unladen. I suspect with out the extra cab and the crane it would be below two tones easily. (thats less than a disco so would not need any special licences) If you get rid of the cherry picker you must be able to get the regestration documents changed :?
