I met up with Idi Admin and his lovely partner of this site on Sunday at a steam rally near me. Your Dean was showing SEB there. Lovely thing - [whispers] he er... caught me w*nking over it.

And SEB? Slightly ratty as they should be, and unmessed with, nice.

My only real claim to 'One tunnynessness' is my stack of 569204 & 569203s. That's anorak-speak for Deep rims to those not so sad as to be familair with these things. Tragic, [Somebody slap me] but I know this rivet-counting sh*t, and I can't help it. See my thread written on deep-rims when I was with another forum.

I've a standard issue 109 and, yes I sahll put up pics, but I must 'fess, it is not your actual all singing Soilhull model of the FC/1 ton persuasion, i'd have thought I had no legitimate place in this site. Anyway the er... Dean of this parish (SWIDT) made an ecclesiastical endorsement so all 'tis fine - so here i am.

Anyways I was chatting to your man and let tell that I have a spare bar-grip 9.00 x 16. One only, I got in my quest for rims, and at the moment it is sitting on a 569203 rim. Not a great amount of tread, just legal 3mm at most, but free to anyone that can collect, and (unless you are good with levers) give the local tyre depot a drink for removiing it from the rim .

Now a question for Dean, can i have your winch? I'll give you a fiver or swap two toffee-wrappers and a sherbet-dip, deal?

I think you have confused Dan with Dean good sir - I have never been called Dean so far as I know, but I will check my birth certificate. Perhaps having grown up in the murky backwaters of central Yorkshire makes my accent somewhat unintelligible to you southern folk?
I do hope you will regail us with the tale of how one identifies these various super-hetero proper mans rims like, as not everyone has seen the rivet-counting light!

As to winch, well you can probably guess the answer to that one!

Mr. F. Wit esq. knows all that there is to know about deep-dish series rims, and then probably a little more on top of that.

He wrote a lengthy missive on another forum, running to several pages and replete with photographs, measurements, and invaluable advise on when a 569203 rim (the deepest and most desirable rim) is actually not a 569203 rim at all..!

He's a good egg. Swears like a trooper, but a good egg non the less.

Yes indeed, that was the main thrust of our discussion at the weekend, and I though *I* was a rivet-counter! Now hopefully he can share his knowledge with us.

I'll try to add to the fray, and time-permitting, post when I can.

If any of you are interested in deep rims, and seeing as that other post whilst essentially correct, with added pedantry has a few small errors, I'm thinking it's due a rewrite. I'll do one here.

[Sorry Dan for having your name wrong - I'm more than a bit 'mutton'. But coming from a bloke freely introducing himself as 'fuckwit' I reckon you'll live with the idea of Dean if for a mo'… anyway Dan it is. There is also a gaping hole for well-written proper, proper posts on LR forums. I'm due to have a go at two, firstly on brakes and secondly steering, (IHMO Both weak points for Leafers) There is plenty of verbiage on the various forums on adding giiddy-up via V8s, TDi conversions. etc, ( I suppose it is more tempting to do & write about). Only to a man few of these LRs stop & steer any better than is required for their last MOT and still fewer even as well as they did ex-factory. With paradoxically more grunt, that simply can't be right, so if I get a mo' i'll write post. My particular hobby-horse is the number of wallyed-up series around with the currently fashionable Tdi conversion, and don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with adding oomph & economy but this one with few exceptions is frankly a 'kin silly short-sighted conversion. It looks outwardly very sensible, but look deeper and not for reasons of originality it's daft. It wouldn't be so bad if they were set-up but you'll struggle to show me the few that are.

If I get time I'll write that too. I reckon, a hint of contention adds a bit of zest
I'll try to write some decent posts to spread what I do know and keep very very quiet when I know f**k-all.

Under different names, I seem to have got myself a reputation for being pretty forthright & contentious (nay abrasive) on some LR forums, and get very much a 'Marmite' reaction to my posts. But good or bad, they get the most respectable quantities of traffic, and they seem to entertain others (and me), so to hell with it, take as you find.

Seems to me, if you're not p*ssing somebody off, 'tis guaranteed, you're not doing your job properly.

I'll be upfront, in fact your Dan asked me about getting banned from another forum. 'Tis true, I can't bitch. I got locked out and frankly I was spending too much time on there, and the way I was carrying on, it was richly deserved. The head-honcho of that forum could see my long post, high traffic, low post-count way, but his lieutenant's wanted me gone. The said lieutenant admins would edit my 'copy'... What went up would not always be how it was written, so they got their way. I flounced out and thus they banned me.

Me? Rather than write dull grey vacant stuff, i'll always support anyone posting info that entertains or informs, 'cos few do,. It's the juice of a decent forum. Methinks, you now what?… it was their 'football', so like it or not, fair enough…. anyway, now you know.

I tend to be on another automotive forum, where posts when either funny, informative, forthright or all three are cheered all the more, whereas on LR forums unless they follow the party line, anything quirky or left-field seems to be resented by the mass.

As I said, time permitting, I'll try to add ( with 100% more wholesome goodness) to the fray. I'll see what I can do to stock-up on my OneTunnynessness .

Now, ho-hum… I have to say, I love a good anorakin' me… it's sad. I can Anorak & rivet-count with the best of them, and as for part no.s`???... (along with a certain hydraulic winch) well… they make me moist Tragic innit?

I think we can all agree a good debate is no bad thing and so long as things remain civil than that's all fine on our book.
As to other forums...well, I think the less said the better in some cases, if only to avoid allowing them the oxygen of publicity.

I shall certainly look forward to an updated version of your rims post, which is without doubt the most detailed I have ever read.

You're not the only one to have suddenly found a locked door there Mr Wit, unfortunately it seems a case of double standards and ones face fitting.
Sounds like you came out of it fairly well, I know others who have had some pretty viscious treatment with absolutely no ground nor reason.

Personally I'm not rivet counter general, I just enjoy a well built Land Rover, and a good laugh on the subject.

Forums
I don't expect forums to play fair, why should and why would they? Forums are like you local pub, your face might fit in one or it might not, simple as that. They're there to serve those the run them, no one else, and I have no issue with that. Anyway, enough on forums.

For the most part (sorry dreadful pun) nothing that left Soilhull can be definitively relied upon to be correct.

As you get closer to the more obscure parts, you can almost bet your life that:

1. The parts book or manual will not mention it
2. If it does it'll not be as your vehicle was built
3. And if the parts books says it must be, the part number stamped on yours won't match.
4, And.. I almost forgot, there will be two totally different parts with teh same number.

I can think of numerous examples of this.
