Hi all.

Have been following the 900 club for years and thought its time to actively join the forum. My time is nearly equally divided between working in South Africa and Zambia. There is quite a working Land Rover culture in Zambia. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkauhhG5NA8

My green oval collection is as follows:
1. Series 3 1-ton Hi-Cap (R) Hybrid.
2. Series 3 1-ton Stake Truck (R) Hybrid.
3. Series 3 SWB SW 3.5Efi RRC Hybrid.
4. Series 3 LWB Hard top 4 cyl (ex UK MOD).
5. Series 3 SWB Hybrid.
6. Series 3S Diesel.
7. 1998 P38 Diesel Hybrid.

Needless to say, I have very little spare time.

I am very intrigued by your two 1-Ton series IIIs. I don't know of any that were exported to Zambia, although three made it to South Africa as fire tenders. You describe them as hybrids, does this mean they are otherwise ordinary vehicles uprated to 1-Ton specification, or something else?

13A, both the 1-tons started out as SADF 2A FCs, 28800822 and 28800956. There are no components on either vehicle that came from an actual 1-ton. As you mentioned, only 3 x 1-tons came to South Africa and I presume they were for evaluation, also presumably without success.
I actually thought you might be intrigued by the Series 3S, as that is a 1-ton vehicle with the option of 900x16 tyres, although only available in SA.
Maybe my Series 3 1-tons should be called replicas, not sure, as I tried to get as close to the 1-ton look as possible with what was available. Can send you a pic if you will post it.

On the subject of the three South African fire tenders, I am not sure it would be correct to say they were not sucessful, we do not know how many other 1-Tons made it to SA as usually the vehicle dispatched to fire truck manufacturers did not have an onward destination noted. Some may also have gone to SA as CKD kits, as was the case with Portugal, although possibly NOT on 1-Ton chassis prefixes.
The three vehicles known to have gone to SA were 22200015G, 22200016G and 22200017G, each built in Poppy Red and converted by Sun Engineering in Feltham. (Southampton I think)

Thanx for posting the pic. The chassis as per pic is 2A FC, but 110" wheelbase for some unknown reason. I had to extend the chassis behind the rear axle by 25cm to fit the Hi-Cap load box. Although originally 4cyl, I fitted a 6cyl firewall and 6cyl motor.
