Hello from France

We're very happy to have discovered your forum, we're a small group of Land Rover enthusiasts living in the south west of France who belong to a French club called "Le Temps des Séries": http://www.le-temps-des-series.com/

Every year we take part in various events throughout France and are always looking for new ideas to present our Land Rovers and share information with other owners. It's one of these ideas that has led us to your forum: we're currently working on creating a presentation which will show how a gear box works. For the moment, this is where we've got to:

The idea also came from this photo taken by one of our Belgian members (though for the moment our plans are rather more modest!):

So why, I hear you ask, have we come here to talk about it??? One of the reasons is the following photo of a mobile Land Rover school seen on your forum:

We'd like to take inspiration from some of the things in this image to present our gearbox, maybe by recreating the side panel of the vehicle (using original parts). On the following post http://www.onetonlandrover.co.uk/22300037G.html it says that the vehicle now belongs to Ben Williams - is Ben a member of this forum??? In fact, we'd like to have a few more details:

- we'd like to re-create an exact copy of the side panel of the car, is there a photo that shows this more clearly, taken directly from the side?
- with regard to the little window on the side, we've never seen one this size before, can anyone tell us more about it, and what are its exact dimensions?
- what is the logo on the door?

There - that's an awful lot of text for three basic questions, I hope that you've managed to read this far and that someone will be able to help us!

Hi and welcome to the forum,
Yes Ben is a member of the forum but he does not get on here every day.

The window was a special fitment by Land-Rover. The door logo is the Rover cars Viking Ship badge.

Hopefully Ben will be along with more info soon.

Hi temps de series

The door sticker is the rover badge as Dan describes. The rear side panel looks like standard british leyland of the time but is no longer on the vehicle (maybe beneath the PO paintwork but doesn't show)

The side windows were most likely added as a tax dodge, during the period there was a reduction in vehicle tax if it had windows behind the front door. They don't particularly aid visibility.

Later i will get some close ups with a measure so you can get a better idea of them

In the continuation of the project , I have several questions

Can you give me the dimensions and have a photo of the window? For the sticker on the panel, what is the color code? Identical to that of the body?

A=11.5cm
B = 6cm measured from under the roof gutter
C= 30.5cm
D=11 cm

There is also a line of domed rivits which are used to secure internal divider between cab and load space.

measured in the same manner as "A" they are 19cm. so very close to the vertical line of the window

The windows themselves are perspex (i think) rather than glass.

With regard to colour of the vehicle. The previous owner to me had it resprayed so difficult to say for sure. The photo indicates a brighter shade than marine blue but this may be colour balance of the picture and that we are used to seeing marine blue faded by sunlight. The internal of the cab is certainly factory marine blue. Where paint has peeled/scratched on the bodywork it looks to be marine blue and only one coat over the top, however the areas are very small.

To me the sticker uses marine blue. However it is possible it is painted (sprayed stencil) rather than a sticker. Unfortunately there is no evidence of it today to say either way. some careful rubbing back may reveal something if it is still there.
